marketing in the financial industry career advice?

Mike asked:

I’m 24 and still looking for some career direction. Right now I am in the financial industry. I really enjoy the industry (although times are very tough now) However, I am on the accounting and mutual fund valuation side. I consider myself more of a “people person” w/ a B.A. in Communications/Marketing and I would like to work towards my MBA over the next few years.

I wanted to know if anyone has experience in doing Marketing within the financial industry?? Any advice on a good career path or what I can expect?? Marketing seems like one of the most difficult departments to walk into without some experience.

It is. Can you take some marketing classes and then try to transfer? Marketing is a whole new ball game compared to finance. However, I did work in finance and switched to marketing. Basically I was trying to get whatever experience I could so that I could start my own business.

One of your first challenges will be in selling yourself. You might be able to talk someone into hiring you as an entry level position. Let them know what you can bring to the table but also stress that you learn very quickly and are dedicated to learning the job as fast as possible. Some companies will mentor you through the beginning stages if you are enthusiastic, energetic, and a fast learner. They will have their own system of doing things but you also have to have a superior imagination.
